Blastocystis Hominis - Dientamoeba Fragilis

Protozoan parasites, including Blastocystis hominis, Dientamoeba fragilis and a few other amoebas are single cell parasites which for years were thought to be harmless. During the last 10 to 12 years a number of medical reports have associated these parasites with various problems such as irritable bowel and chronic fatigue. It is interesting that Blastocystis and or Dientamoeba are found in 5% of the general population but up to 30% of people suffering with irritable bowel. Some of the clients contacting us have a history of an acute infection of the digestive track while travelling in the tropics or in countries with poor hygiene. These days many people contract these parasites in the UK.

Parasitology tests

The detection of these parasites is difficult, because they disintegrate promptly after they leave the intestine unless the stool sample is placed immediately in special fixative. In the U.K. there are only a few laboratories equipped to detect them, with more in Europe and the USA. The test is thorough. As these parasites are rather elusive, we often recommend three samples for greater accuracy.

Treatment options

A number of common antibiotics available in the U.K. today are also used for the treatment of the above parasites. Erythromycin, Metronidazole or Doxycycline appear to be less effective than combinations of anti-parasitic medicines available overseas that are used in our clinics. We advise on how to safeguard a healthy gut while taking the medication and how to deal with any side effects.

Confirm eradication

We normally advise to repeat the parasitology test after the end of a course of treatment to ensure complete clearance. Earlier tests might miss the parasites during their reproductive phase. Often people with known food intolerance may underestimate its role in causing chronic abdominal symptoms. It is important this problem is also addressed.

Specialist tips and notes

Blastocystis and or Dientamoeba are found in up to 30% of people suffering with irritable bowel but only 5% of the general population who carry them unaware of their presence. Eradication of protozoan parasites is possible by means of suitable anti-parasitic medications. Sometimes the parasites cause no symptoms.
